US creates a research centre dedicated to perovskite

The US Department of Energy is providing $14 million for a research centre on perovskite solar technology. Its purpose is to study

the long-term reliability of perovskite cells, the creditworthiness of the companies that set up to produce them, and the development of testing standards. This is because commercial development remains problematic as there are still many unknowns about the technology

Perovskite cells differ from silicon and other commercial photovoltaic technologies in several ways. This means that new standards will be needed to accurately measure their performance. Setting these standards will be one of the first tasks of the centre.

Determining reliability is another stumbling block facing perovskites. The centre will also work on accelerated testing to better understand the degradation and long-term performance of perovskite cells and panels . This means examining the degradation of these materials compared to traditional solar cell materials. What causes this degradation needs to be investigated, measured and addressed.
