An energy breakdown in the US in 2021

Market research firm Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) reports record investment in clean energy, despite the Covid 19 pandemic

with 105 billion dollars. This represents a growth of 11% over 2020.

Electricity generation from renewables increased by 4.1%, but overall they still account for only 21% of total generation (up from 20% last year).Natural gas has the largest share (38%), followed by coal (22%) and nuclear (19%).

In terms of new generation capacity, photovoltaics dominated for the third consecutive year with a new record of 24.2 GW (2020: 18.6 GW), ahead of wind power (13.0 GW). Photovoltaics accounted for almost 54% of the total new grid-connected electricity generation capacity of 45 GW. A good quarter (6.2 GW) of the newly installed solar power plants were generation facilities for private and commercial electricity consumers.
