Coal-fired power stations put up a fight
Worldwide, 476 gigawatts of coal-fired power plant capacity is under construction or in the planning stage
(Editor's note: to be compared with the 250 GW of solar power plants installed in 2022!). If all these plants were built, they would make it impossible to achieve the global climate targets. The survey carried out by the German climate research institute MCC (Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change) suggests that only 215 GW, or less than half, should be built. However, this study took place in the autumn of 2021. This was shortly before the first round of Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETP), in which Southern countries negotiate with rich industrialised countries to help phase out coal-fired power generation.
The difference between official planning and actual implementation varies considerably from country to country, with the fewest project cancellations in China, and more in Bangladesh and Mongolia.
