The future of photovoltaics lies on rooftops

Rooftop solar power could meet 45% of electricity demand in the United States, although by 2022 it will only represent

1.5% of electricity consumption, according to Environment America. Two years ago, rooftop production reached 61 TWh.

The big advantage of residential installations is that they integrate with the building, reduce transport infrastructure, and cut electricity bills with battery storage.

Large, flat commercial and industrial buildings represent another development opportunity.

Editor's note There is less and less land available for large-scale power plants. Lakes will also be filled with solar power plants. There's still the sea, with its tides, swells and difficulties in stabilising the panels.

Above all, there are the roofs of houses. That's where solar power is going to develop, even if for the moment this space is more expensive and often small. For this space to be occupied, a revolution is needed in people's minds and in energy structures to move from a network to local production. We do not yet seem ready to make this change.
